5K Walk and Run
In May 2008, the Stuart community held its first-ever Poetry in Motion 5K Walk and Run to benefit the school’s Visiting Author program. More than 200 runners gathered to participate in the inaugural event.
Making Visiting Authors a Reality
The Visiting Author program at Stuart was a dream of three former Stuart educators. Betty Lies, Nancy Light and Vickie McCarthy, all English teachers, sought a way to bring prominent authors of various backgrounds and styles to the school to discuss their craft with students.
Upon the death of Mrs. McCarthy in 2007, the Stuart community established the Poetry in Motion event as a way to support the fledgling program and bring the dream of these teachers to fruition. As a result of funds raised through the Poetry in Motion event and generous donations, the first Visiting Author program was held in January 2009. Pulitzer Prize-winning poet Paul Muldoon was Stuart's inaugural Visiting Author.
Get Involved
Poetry in Motion consists of a 5 kilometer run/walk for adults. There are plenty of shorter races and other activities for children during the event, and the run begins and ends at the Stuart campus. All participants receive a T-Shirt with their advance registration.
